Officials are investigating a fast-moving fire that spread through a Framingham rooming house Tuesday night.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the rooming house is home to 14 tenants, and the house behind it, a "sober house," houses 11 tenants. The South Middlesex Opportunity Council runs both homes.

Many of the residents were asleep when the smoke alarm went off at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Fortunately, residents were able to help each other evacuate and everyone got out safely.

By the time firefighters arrived at 14 Gordon St., the flames were out of control. Crews were able to knock the fire out before it spread to nearby buildings.

According to officials, the fire started on the first floor where someone apparently left an electrical device plugged in on a mattress. The man living in that room was not home at the time.

SMOC is a private non-profit operation that helps low-income residents with housing, counseling and metal health issues and any other necessary services. The American Reed Cross is helping officials find temporary housing for displaced residents.
