Barnicle Commentary -- Patriots Super Bowl Victory

Opinion Aired Feb. 2, 2004

Let's take a peek at the culture around us sort of try and put things in perspective and establish a priority for what's important and what's not, OK?

We'll ignore for the moment the regional euphoria over the Patriots' victory. It's a great thing, but they just did it two years ago.

They're wonderful. The Kraft's are fabulous owners. And Tom Brady is, well, Tom Brady is a god.

So what's left on the plate?

The fact that we have a budget deficit that threatens to choke our children with taxes? The fact that we may have been talked into war when it wasn't absolutely necessary? Or, are we beside ourselves with anger and amazement over the half time show at (Sunday) night's Super Bowl?

Bingo!

I think we have a winner. I mean, what do you suppose CBS and the NFL were thinking? You can get anyone to perform at the Super Bowl. It's a world stage and who do they come up with? Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, otherwise known as "not happening."

What was the deal? Yanni was busy? Liberace was dead? Or did they just decide to get as lame as they could? The show was produced by MTV.

Naturally, millions are outraged because of what was exposed during the segment, and I'm not referring to the lack of talent. The army of the annoyed includes parents upset because they figured the Super Bowl was suitable for family viewing. This was geared for a family -- turns out it was the Osbornes.

Why so many seem so surprised though is puzzling. After all, haven't they see the day to day garbage that passes for entertainment on MTV?

As for the other thing, the Janet Jackson deal? Think about it.

Then take a look at me, and you'll realize this wasn't the first time there's been a boob on TV.
