MEDFIELD, Mass. -- Dozens of children at a Medfield daycare center escaped injury Monday when a car went off the road at the intersection of North and Frairy Streets and crashed into the playground of the Beginning Years Child Development Center, police said.
There were about 50 children inside at the time of the crash, but none were injured.Witnesses said the operator of the Jaguar that crashed was a driver who appeared to be in her 80s. Her daughter was a passenger in the car with her."You know what? I was so thankful that it was raining," said the daughter, Kathy Walsh, relieved that all the day care students were inside and not playing in the playground when the car crashed about 3:30 p.m.

According to police and witnesses, Walsh's 86-year-old mother had just mailed a letter across the street at a drive-up mailbox outside the post office."We mailed our letter in the post, stepped on the gas and we rocketed," Walsh said. "It happened all so fast. I saw the wall. I saw the sign that used to be there. We went right through it."Her mother had just placed the letter in the mailbox when the car careened across the post office parking lot, over the curb, and across the driveway down into the playground sandbox."It was very surreal and a very freak accident. There has been a school here for over 15 years," said school worker Cathleen Farrell. "The children were just waking up from nap. The shades hadn't even gone up. So the children didn't see anything."Police said the driver and passenger sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals for observation."What could've happened here, it was ... I felt very ill about that," said Walsh. The owner of the day care building said he's going to put up a permanent barrier between the driveway and playground to prevent other accidents from happening.
