BOSTON -- The man accused of shooting two people in a Worcester, Mass., home improvement store Monday is back in Massachusetts after police tracked him to New York state.
Now, the attorney for Mark Anthony LeBreton, 38, of Auburn, Mass., is shedding light on a possible motive for the double shooting.NewsCenter 5's Lynn Jolicoeur reported that a shackled LeBreton was officially handed over to Worcester police at the Massachusetts border Wednesday. His run from the law ended in Worcester, N.Y., when a sharp-eyed toll taker spotted him as he stopped at her booth.
"I realized that it was him. He didn't speak to me, he only smiled and I told him there was no toll, he was all set, and away he went," said toll worker Mary Day, who had just been talking on the phone with a friend in Everett, Mass., about the store shooting."He was just telling me what was on the news over there, and we were joking around that the person was spotted so close to where I work," said Day.She had just briefly looked at a flier she'd been given that featured LeBreton's picture. After he drove off she called 911. New York state police caught up with him and chased him for 15 miles as he allegedly threw an AK-47 rifle and a .40-caliber Glock handgun from his pickup truck. That's the same kind of handgun that was used in the shooting. Police said he was wearing a bulletproof vest."At about 7:15 a.m., LeBreton pulled to the side of the road on I-88 in Worcester, Oswego County, New York, and surrendered without incident," said New York State Police Maj. Gerald Myers."The thing that caught my eye was that he had a New Hampshire plate on a truck that had a Massachusetts area code on it," said Day.LeBreton's lawyer, Mathew B. Tully, said his client was trying to protect himself against one of the victims who he said was a stalker. He also said LeBreton had knowledge of an adulterous affair that one of the victims was involved in. He said LeBreton was going to expose the affair when the confrontation occurred and he fired his weapon in self-defense.Steve Collins, a neighbor and business associate of LeBreton's, was shot in the neck and remains in critical condition. James Walling, a store employee who apparently did not know LeBreton, was caught in the crossfire and injured in the arm. Collins, a plumbing contractor who worked for Lowe's, lives in LeBreton's Auburn neighborhood.LeBreton was expected to be arraigned in Worcester, Mass., on Thursday on two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
