WORCESTER, N.Y. -- A Massachusetts man accused of shooting two people at a home improvement store in Worcester has been captured in upstate New York.
NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Mark LeBreton was spotted Wednesday morning as he exited the New York Thruway outside Albany. A police pursuit began in Cobleskill, N.Y., and ended 10 miles away in Worcester, N.Y. LeBreton was taken to Princetown, N.Y., for processing at a police station. The shooting Monday afternoon at Lowe's sparked a nationwide hunt for LeBreton. Steve Collins, a contractor who allegedly had a bad relationship with LeBreton, was shot in the neck. Store employee Jim Walling was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the shoulder.Police are crediting LeBreton's arrest to the work of an alert toll taker. Mary Day spotted the suspect's car as he was driving his pickup truck."Officers activated their emergency lights, but he did not increase his speed. As police officers followed LeBreton, they observed him throw several objects from his vehicle. At about 7:15 a.m. LeBreton pulled to the side of the road on I-88 in Worcester, and surrendered without incident. He was wearing ballistic body armor when taken into custody. The objects thrown from the vehicle have been recovered," New York State Police Maj. Gerry Myers said.Myers said that cases often involve the work of a toll taker. Officials said that LeBreton will be arraigned later Wednesday, but will not be returned to Massachusetts for at least one day. When he does return, Worcester, Mass., police say LeBreton will face two counts of armed assault with intent to murder. With LeBreton's arrest, the high alert ended in Worcester, Mass., where there was fear that other potential victims may have been on an alleged hit list. A nearby elementary school has been heavily guarded."It's a sense of relief. We have him off the streets. We did receive information that he could have weapons, and he did indeed," Worcester Police Department Sgt. Gary Quitadamo said. "It is, again, a big sense of relief for our department and everyone concerned."
