Burlington, Mass -- There's new technology that's making transplantation easier, and the Lahey Clinic is the first in the nation to use it.
NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner has the story of two local brothers who have benefited from this medical advance."I will say one of the best things about being stuck in bed is you're forced to watch the (baseball) games," organ donor David Burke said.Brothers David and Stephen Burke share a love of sports. But now, they also share something else -- David's liver."Especially now that it's over, especially now that I'm looking at him and he's alive -- and the hard part's behind us," David Burke said.Stephen Burke had progressive liver disease and in July was told he needed a new organ. His little brother stepped up to the plate."He matched up perfectly, " Stephen Burke said, "He's my hero -- yeah he's quite a man."Surgeons at the Lahey Clinic were able to perform this live liver transplant with the help of a new 3-D imaging program that functions like a liver road map."We can obtain a very accurate anatomic assessment of both the donor and the recipient liver which helps us plan our operation so that we have no surprises when we get into the operating room," Lahey Clinic's, Dr. James Pomposelli said. The technology is reducing time in the operating room and the risk of complications."We got the Cubbies on tonight," said Stephen Burke. For David Burke and Stephen Burke -- it's nice just to look forward to the game. David Burke knows he could very well have been watching it alone."He had a 100 percent chance of not living very long, so whatever chance he has now to live longer is worth the risk," David Burke said.Doctors say it will take about three months for David's liver to grow back close to normal size. Both brothers could be out of the hospital as soon as Monday -- just in time to enjoy Monday night's playoff game.
