Woman Injured After Driving SUV Into House
Car Crashed Head-On Into House, Witnesses Say

EVERETT, Mass. -- A woman sustained "grave" injuries after she drove head-on into a house in Everett Wednesday, police said.Witnesses said a woman driving a black Toyota Forerunner drove downhill on Central Avenue and plowed head-on into a two-story house at the base of the hill at 463 Ferry St.There were no skid marks on the street where the SUV hit the house about 5:30 p.m., police said.Witnesses said that the driver was on her cell phone before the crash, according to police. They said the crash sounded like a bomb."I saw person hit the car and then it just hit the curb and hit the house. It was like they were accelerating as they went," said witness Christine Cook."The sound was incredible. It was so loud, traumatizing," said Gloria Laplant, who said the car appeared to be traveling at a speed of about 60 mph.The woman was being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital for "grave" injuries, after being freed from the wreckage by the Jaws of Life, police said.Police have not yet released the name of the driver.Crews are working to reinforce the damaged house to prevent it from collapsing. The owner was not home at the time. He said there have been scares at his house in the past."We actually had an episode in the springtime. We had planned to do some work, try to get the city to put some barriers out front," said Steve Napolitano.
