A South Dennis man was ordered held on $50,000 bail, accused of beating an elderly man with a glass candlestick during a home invasion Monday night.

The 83-year-old victim, a former Marine who fought in World War II, was treated at the scene by the Yarmouth Fire Department for cuts and bruises, Yarmouth police said.

Alan Menchin, 19, of South Dennis, was charged with assault and battery while armed with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60, home invasion, assault and battery causing serious injury and larceny from a building.

Police were called to the home on South Street at 8:23 p.m. Monday when a woman called 911 to say her husband had been violently attacked during a home invasion.

"He's been attacked by a man who came in the house," the woman told the 911 dispatcher. "Hurry, hurry, hurry."

Based on the woman's description of the attacker, a state police trooper arrested Menchin a short time later, about a quarter mile from the house, Yarmouth Lt. Steven Xiarhos said.

"He took on this punk and I think the suspect had more than he bargained for. We're proud of this Marine for protecting his family," Xiarhos said.

Xiarhos said the suspect was wet and there was fresh blood on his T-shirt. Police confiscated items that matched the description of things allegedly taken during the home invasion, Xiarhos said.
