BOSTON -- Remnants of Earl were still being seen along the Massachusetts coast Saturday when two teenage swimmers were nearly swept out to sea in Sandwich. The Coast Guard received a rescue call at about 12:30 p.m.“They had been pushed out to see by the current and the wind,” said Jason Finch of the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said a boy and girl, both 16-years-old, had been on surf kayaks at Town Neck Beach when they were pushed out by 20 to 25 mile per hour winds.“My daughter and her friend were out boarding and didn’t realize how far they had been blown out,” said Claire Potash. The father of one of the teens was in a kayak nearby. Officials said he tried to get to the teens but was unsuccessful.A Coast guard rescue crew arrived with an inflatable raft and was able to pull both teens back to shore. Both were checked out on scene by EMS and were said to be in good condition.Earlier in the day Gov. Deval Patrick called off the state of emergency but still urged swimmers and boaters to exercise caution.“The rip currents are still quite strong,” said Patrick. The Coast Guard Saturday’s rescue was typical after a storm like Earl.“Don’t go out too far, stay within your comfort level,” said Finch. “If you’re going to be on a boogie board or a kayak make sure you have a life jacket and just know that these effects are still there.”
