BOSTON -- The man accused of killing former priest John Geoghan has written a letter detailing his alleged motive for the murder.
NewsCenter 5's Steve Sbraccia reported Friday that Joseph Druce claims he was abused as a child and offers an apology to Geoghan's sister. The letter from Druce was sent unsolicited to The Catholic Free Press. Fraught with spelling errors, the letter claims Geoghan's murder was committed to show the world that it must deal more stringently with child predators. The newspaper said that the letter contains the correct identifying numbers placed on the envelope and letter by the corrections officer who accepted it for mailing on Sept. 2."I'm the (alleged) murderer of defrocked priest John. J. Geoghan and a victim of sexual abuse as a child," the letter said.Druce also offers an apology to Geoghan's sister."I'm sorrful to Ms. Catherine Geoghan for her loss. Altho she'll probley not forgive me, I send my sincere and heartfelt apology," the letter said.Druce tries to explain why he committed the murder. He referenced the sex offenders he's seen in prison."There was no remorse, only gloating and reminissaing over past victims. That was my motivation," the letter said. The district attorney said that Druce spent more than one month plotting the murder and regarded Geoghan as some sort of prize."This wasn't a crime to commit a crime, but to let the world know that all child preditors must be delt with a more stryngent hand," the letter said.Druce, who was indicted for Geoghan's murder Thursday, also asks that lawmakers enact tougher penalties for child molesters to "stop the tragedies and violence against children."
