BOSTON -- The shooting rampage in Connecticut that left nine people dead brings back painful memories for the seven families who lost loved ones a decade ago in Wakefield.Michael McDermott's rampage at a Wakefield technology company the day after Christmas 10 years ago left seven dead. For families of the victims, reliving the horror as they now watch a similar story unfold in Connecticut, Attorney General Martha Coakley, who prosecuted the case as a district attorney, said it seems like no time has passed."In our case, Edgewater had garnished his wages. In some cases, these are unpredictable but in some cases you can mitigate the threat," Coakley said.Since the trial that McDermott to prison for life, Coakley has conducted training sessions for managers hoping to minimize possible risks at their own businesses.Once you have those stress situations, the layoffs, the terminations, then you start to say, 'What are the threat assessments of particular individuals around any history violence, any obsessions, any perceived injustices, people who haven't been treated fairly by the institution?'" Coakley said. "We often don't know about people's personal lives or the personal stress that may create this."While some may see Omar Thorton's suicide in Connecticut Tuesday as a relief for the community, Coakley said she thinks unanswered questions can be more difficult for some family members."It does end the story, because there will be no trial because of it, but I don't think that's any relief however for people who have lost family members in the shooting," Coakley said. Coakley said as random as most workplace rampages are, she believes the shootings at Edgewater Technology were even more unpredictable since McDermott was not fired or laid off. His salary was being garnished because of unpaid taxes due to the IRS.
