5 Family Members To Face Charges In Fall River Incident

BOSTON -- An elderly Fall River woman hospitalized with severe bed sores after she was found sitting in urine and feces died Thursday -- the same day she turned 81.Mary Aroujo died at St. Anne's Hospital. On Saturday, her family called for medical help at 161 Lonsdale St. because she was incoherent -- a condition first noticed several days early but no action was taken, police said.Aroujo was taken to St. Anne's and found to have several bed sores. The sores were so severe that bone and tendons were visible, police said. She was also being treated for an eye infection and a fungal infection in her navel area.Aroujo had been sleeping in a recliner or on the couch and would spend all day sitting in the recliner, sometimes in her own urine and feces, police said.Duarte Cabral, 51, the victim's son-in-law, Karen Cabral, 49, the victim's daughter, Keith Cabral, 28, Scott Cabral, 24, and Corey Cabral, 21, the victim's grandsons, were charged with permitting serious injury to an elder/disabled person.The case remained under investigation. Prosecutors said there is no decision yet on upgrading the charges.
