A Gloucester woman drowned at a beach Wednesday night after she got knocked over by a wave.

Donna Sheehan, 56, was swimming at Good Harbor Beach with her daughter and grandson at about 8:15 p.m. after the lifeguards went off duty, Wicked Local Gloucester reported.

Woman Killed By Rogue Wave

The three were knocked down by a wave. Sheehan yelled for help, but by the time her daughter got her son to safety, Sheehan disappeared under the water.

Police said it appeared Sheehan was an experienced swimmer.

The woman was later found unconscious near the shore. Sheehan was taken to Addison-Gilbert Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
