A Wellesley woman was charged Monday in connection with the death of a fetus after a pregnant woman was assaulted at a Dorchester nail salon.

Ayanna Woodhouse, 25, of Wellesley, was arraigned on manslaughter and assault charges.

Woodhouse allegedly punched Tori Catron, 26, who was six months pregnant, in the face and kicked her in the stomach at Tulip Nails in April.

Assistant District Attorney Leora Joseph said victim had gone to a manicure appointment at a Neponset Avenue nail salon. A short time later, Woodhouse entered the salon.

"The two of them began to chat," Joseph said. "That chat slowly escalated to a heated argument."

Woodhouse allegedly struck the woman, who fell to the ground. Prosecutors said Woodhouse continued to punch and kick the woman, even "dragging her across the floor of the salon."

Witnesses shouted at Woodhouse to stop because the victim was pregnant, Joseph said.

"It was a violent attack," Joseph said, "and an attack where the victim had no chance."

The pregnant victim was later transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Doctors performed an emergency Caesarian section, but the baby girl was stillborn.

"You shouldn't be attacking a six-month pregnant woman. The child dies. That speaks for itself," said the victim's father Donald Catron.

After autopsy, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death to be placental abruption -- a detachment of the placenta from the uterus -- due to maternal trauma.

Officials said Tori Catron was carrying Woodhouse's cousin's baby.

A not guilty plea was entered for Woodhouse, and she was held on $20,000 bail and ordered to stay away from the victim. She's scheduled to return to court on Aug. 12.
