Wild Turkeys Crash Through Home Windows
2 Turkeys Found In Local Homes This Week

BOSTON -- For the second time in less than a week, animal control officers were called to a Massachusetts home after a wild turkey broke in.On Sunday in Wenham, the McKenna family called the police after they found a turkey sitting on their living room couch. The bird crashed through a window, scattering pieces of glass all over the floor, the Salem News reported.Wenham Animal Control Officer Stephen Kavanagh and two police officers were able to coax the turkey out of the house through an open window. Kavanagh said the 40-pound bird was probably attracted to its reflection in the window and flew at it.Turkey mating season takes place in spring, and peaks in April and May. Male turkeys do not defend territories, but do fight among each other to establish status, dominance and mating rights in their flocks, according to Mass Wildlife.Last week in West Roxbury, residents called 911 after hearing what sounded like someone breaking into a Woodbrier Road home. When police arrived at the home, they found a 10- to 12-pound turkey.Turkeys are native to New England, and all but disappeared by 1850, according to Mass Wildlife. After extensive population restoration programs, there are an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 turkeys in the state.
