19-Year-Old Driver Arrested, Charged With Motor Vehicle Homicide

LYNN, Mass. -- Police said a 19-year-old Salem woman was killed when the car she was riding in sped through a stop sign, slammed into another car and flipped over in Lynn, injuring the other passengers and a father and his teenage son.Police identified the victim as Julia Gauthier. Witnesses to the 12:30 a.m. crash said Gauthier was partially ejected through the sunroof of a Toyota 4-Runner when it rolled over on Glenwood Street.The 19-year-old driver of the Toyota, Christopher Maxson, of Marblehead, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was also charged with motor vehicle homicide, failure to stop at a stop sign and reckless operation of a vehicle. Police ordered a suicide watch for Maxson Sunday.“It looked like the boy that was driving tried to pull her out and when he noticed she was gone he just went panicky,” said Matthew Anderson, who witnessed the crash.
Video | Photos: 19-Year-Old Killed In CrashCarlos Cedano said he was driving down Eastern Avenue with his teenage son when he saw the Toyota barreling down Glenwood Street in their direction. Cedano said he threw on the emergency brake and closed his eyes as the car ran through the stop sign and slammed into his Honda Civic.Witnesses said the Toyota continued down Glenwood Street after the collision, weaving into one parked van, then another, finally reeling over upside-down on top of a parked car.“(Gauthier) died immediately,” said witness Vera Salah. “She didn’t take a last breath.”Cedano said he and his son were both treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital. Two young men in the Toyota and the driver were also hospitalized after the crash.State Police are investigating the incident.
