Man Charged In 1-Year-Old's Death

A Vermont man is facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of a 1-year-old girl from Andover.

Police said Alexander Stolte, 19, was watching Kyleigh McDaniel on Wednesday night at a home in Chelsea, Vt. They said blunt impacts on the head killed the baby. Stolte was ordered held without bail. A bail hearing will be scheduled later.

According to the baby's family, her mother, Mackenzie McDaniel, had been dating Stolte for about three months.

Police said a 911 call was made Wednesday night from 302 Brook Road in Chelsea to report that the child was not breathing. Kyleigh was taken to a hospital in Randolph, Vt., where she was pronounced dead.

McDaniel's family said the mother left Kyleigh in Stolte's care when she went to work in Lebanon, N.H., that night.

The police affidavit said that Stolte called Mackenzie McDaniel three times that night. In the first call, he said that one of Kyleigh's eyes looked droopy, which her mother said could be from a cold. The second time, he said that Kyleigh wouldn't sleep, and the third call was to tell her mother that the baby wasn't breathing and that he called 911.

Police said Stolte told them that the girl had fallen into a stroller. Police said they suspected he had been drinking, which he initially denied. But he later said he had been drinking vodka, and a Breathalyzer test put his blood-alcohol level at .07, police said.

This is not the first time the McDaniel family has had to deal with tragedy. In 2007, Pfc. Justin McDaniel died from a non-combat injury in Iraq.

The McDaniel family said they have been in touch with Kyleigh's father, Nicholas Robinson, of New London, N.H., and funeral arrangements are still pending.

A group of contractors who are friends of Robinson have established a fund to help pay for Kyleigh's funeral and expenses. Anyone wishing to contribute can make donations to the Kyleigh Mae Fund at Lake Sunapee Bank, P.O. Box 37, 321 Main St., New London, N.H., or any other Lake Sunapee Bank branch.
