State Police continued to patrol a stretch of Route 3 in Kingston Saturday after five cars were hit with unknown objects within 30 minutes, rattling motorists and stirring up memories of a highway sniper who terrorized the roadway several years ago.

The cars were struck south of Exit 8 in Kingston Friday between 6:30 and 7 p.m., a police spokesman said. Two vehicles were hit in the windshield and the others were damaged near the front passenger window.

Anne Brennan, an editor for the Cape Cod Times, said she was driving home at 6:48 p.m. when the passenger-side window of her Toyota Corolla suddenly blew out.

"I have to admit to screaming," said Brennan, of West Roxbury. "My passenger-side window just exploded.”

Brennan said she went to the Kingston Police Department, where she met victims in two other two vehicles. The others were not injured, but they were shaken up, she said.

Jeff Monroe and Hailey White said they were heading out to dinner when their sedan was hit.

“All of the sudden, there was a really big bang and the window shattered and it fell all over Hailey,” said White.

“I screamed,” said White. “I thought (Monroe) was kind of playing a trick on me.”

State police patrolled the highway and searched the area with a K-9 team and a helicopter, but authorities are still trying to determine how the cars were damaged. None of the drivers could locate the objects that struck their cars.

In 2001, several arrests were made after "The Route 3 Sniper" terrorized motorists, striking dozens of cars with projectiles in the Plymouth area. Police arrested Dimitri P. Spiliakos of Marshfield after they found a cache of weapons and newspaper clippings about highway shootings in his home.

The victims of Friday’s incidents said they were more startled than scared.

“Had Jeff lost control of the car or had it been something more dangerous, I can definitely see how it definitely could have been much worse,” said White.

A sniper may have shot at cars traveling along Route 3 in Kingston and Plymouth Friday night, according to the State Police.
