By now most Bay State residents have received the long-awaited census forms. But a few people got an extra large mailing from the Census Bureau asking dozens of questions.

With worries about identity theft, some people are reluctant to fill out the long questionnaire.

Dawn Young is usually quick to get paperwork such as bills and taxes out of the way, but she hesitated when she got not one but two census forms -- a short form and one with 40 questions. Young feared it was fake because of the personal information requested.

What she and a small percent of Americans received was the community survey. Secretary of State Bill Galvin agrees it is confusing.

"We're trying to get everyone to answer the primary survey, which is the 10 question one and now we have this out there. It is necessary, but the timing isn't the best," Galvin said.

Galvin warned that there are a few census scams with people trying to steal personal information.

"Anything online is not real, anything coming from the Census Bureau will, of course, be from the Department of Commerce. It will not require postage to return it. No monies are required and it will never ask for your Social Security number," Galvin said.

Young said she's a responsible citizen and will take part in the census as long as her form is legitimate.

"Until I hear something from a government official stating that this is OK and you can send it out, I think I'll hold on to it for a little bit," she said.

Census administrators say the process is safe. While they use your information they say your personal data must be kept from public view for 72 years.
