Quincy residents were warned to be on the lookout for a man and woman who are posing as Federal Emergency Management Agency officials who say they are assessing flood damage.

Police said that the scammers were spotted on Farrington Street, trying to inspect homes. None of the residents who were approached allowed the pair into their home.

"We do have information that it was a white male and a black female. They didn't identify themselves with any credentials, and they may be driving a van with Florida plates on it," Police Chief Paul Keenan said.

Police fielded calls from people in the Montclair section of Quincy. Police in Braintree and Holbrook are also investigating similar reports.

While local, state and federal aid workers are in the area, at this point there would be no reason for them to be entering people's homes.

"So we were a little bit concerned that there'd be some type of scam going on," Keenan said.

The idea of scammers trying to take advantage of the flooding situation isn't sitting well with people in town.

"They should be punished. They should be taken care of. We've got enough problems. We don't need any more like that," said Walter Kilroy, of Quincy.

If at some point in the future aid workers do need to enter homes, the police chief said that information would be posted on the city's Web site.
