A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority driver was honored Friday for her quick action that avoided a tragedy on the rails.

Charice Lewis was at the controls in November when a woman stumbled and fell onto the tracks at North Station. Lewis was able to stop the Orange Line trolley just before it hit the woman.

Lewis was honored Friday during the Department of Transportation's Women's History Month celebration.

"Growing up, I would quote Mr. James Brown -- 'It's a man's world.' It's not any more," she said.

The incident was captured on surveillance video and shown around the world.

"It's still scary. I wouldn't ever want to happen again, and would never wish it on anyone," she said.

The incident happened after a woman illegally smoking near the edge of the tunnel stepped on her cigarette, stumbled and fells across the tracks -- right into the path of Lewis' trolley.

"It was scary. I was just glad that she was able to crawl up from under there with all her limbs. That's all I was happy about," Lewis said.

Other passengers frantically waved and pointed to catch her attention. At the controls, Lewis came within inches of hitting the woman. A humble Lewis said there is plenty of credit to go around.

"I still don't believe I am the only hero, because of all the people on the platform -- if it wasn't for them, it would have been something different. I am not the only hero here," she said.

Also honored on Friday was MBTA inspector Jaqueline Osorio, who also alerted Lewis to stop.
