BRAINTREE, Mass. -- A brazen daytime jewelry store heist at the South Shore Plaza Mall now has mall management working to improve security on their property. One day after a diamond heist at the Zales jewelry store, it was business as usual at the mall, with security guards patrolling the mall, cameras keeping a watchful eye. But changes could be coming soon."We're always talking to the South Shore Plaza about enhanced security. The police chief is always looking at deployment," Braintree Mayor Brian Sullivan said.Right now, two Braintree police officers are assigned to the mall from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. They even have a holding station set up in the food court.Sullivan says, however, that there is the possibility of a shift change in response to the $40,000 diamond theft, which happened at 11:30 a.m., three hours before police show up for work."This is an isolated incident. Obviously very well thought out. It wasn't a crime against a person, it was a crime against the store," said mall general manager Julie Tullius.Less that 24 hours later, the mall opened its doors for a media tour, unveiling new stores such as Nordstrom and Target. The mayor said adding more square footage may mean another officer must be assigned to patrol the mall."I think every community is seeing increased activity, which is unfortunate. We just have to be vigilant," Sullivan said.Meanwhile, police are waiting for more security video and tips. The jewelry thieves escaped in a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass with Michigan registration number CBP2087.
