A Westwood High School senior was killed in a one-car crash early Saturday morning in Norwood, the school said in an email sent to parents.

Paul Hanley, 17, of Westwood, died after his car crashed first into a utility pole and then into a stone wall on Winter Street.

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee "was unable to negotiate a curve due to icy road conditions," Norwood police said in a statement.

Two passengers in the car, also students at Westwood High, suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Joel Priestley, 17, was taken to Caritas Norwood Hospital and Robert Foxx, 19, was taken to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

"Our school community is grieving this sudden and tragic loss. Our thoughts are with Paul’s family during this difficult and sad time," high school Principal Emily Parks wrote to parents.

Football coach Paul Hallion told WickedLocal/Westwood that his own connection to Paul was as a dedicated athlete who worked hard to start this year but was sidelined by a shoulder injury, “Of all injuries, that’s probably one of the most difficult to absorb,” Hallion said, but Hanley didn’t let the setback deter him. He kept at the physical therapy, working to recover, even though the injury ultimately kept him from playing. “Still, every time you saw him, there’s a smile on his face,” Hallion said, “He wasn’t a quitter.”

Paul hung in and stayed with the team, his father said, when he probably didn’t have to. “That was Paul,” he said, “He was at his happiest when he was with his friends.”
