BEDFORD, N.H. -- Tatiana Holmes and Edmund Cammarato face charges of endangering the welfare of their children, ages 3 and 9 and animal cruelty after authorities raided their Bedford home on Thursday. Newscenter 5's Mary Saladna reported that they found 30 puppies, 14 cats and what they described as "unbearable squalor and stench."

"Waste on the floor, a lot of urine all over the place. The litter boxes were extremely overused for the cats to the point where it was hard to tell what was litter and what wasn't. It was bad. All the animals need some type of medical attention," said Wayne Richardson, Bedford's code enforcement officer.

But not all the animals were found alive. Two puppies were found rotting in the master bathroom.

"We plan on doing an autopsy on the two deceased dogs to find that cause of death and go from there," said Capt. Paul Roy of the Bedford Police Department.

Investigators say Cammarato was selling the English and French bulldogs over the Internet -- the breed can fetch up to $2,000 per dog.

Police were alerted to the situation by someone who showed up at their home to buy a dog and couldn't believe the condition of the home.

Now the animals have been placed in shelters and the couple's two children in state custody -- the house has been condemned. The town code enforcement officer says it's too trashed to be lived in.

Friday in court the woman accused, a Russian citizen with an Master's of Busniness Administration and two jobs, pleaded for her freedom.

She told the judge she and her unemployed husband are dedicated to their children and pets.

Holmes, 28, and Cammarata, 56, asked the judge to reduce each of their $50,000 bail.

The judge rejected the request.
