A man in his 20s was fatally stabbed and four others were wounded in a street fight in Allston Sunday morning, police said.

The melee erupted near the corner of Harvard and Brighton avenues at about 1:45 a.m., in the heart of a bustling college neighborhood where students and revelers usually fill the streets in the early morning.

One of the victims died Sunday afternoon after he was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital for treatment. He has not been identified.

A 24-year-old man with serious injuries was still being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. The other three victims were hospitalized with knife wounds.

Allston resident Mitchell Martinez, 23, was arrested near the scene of the fight shortly after police arrived. Witnesses identified Martinez as one of the attackers and said the altercation followed an argument outside of the Common Ground bar, police said.

Martinez will be arraigned on a murder charge Monday morning in Brighton District Court. He was also charged with resisting arrest and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The attack comes three months after a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death outside of a convenience store a few hundred feet away.

Police pressured local bars and entertainment venues to enforce safety measures in the area following his death.

Boozy behavior is a common sight along the strip of bars and music clubs in the neighborhood, an area home to hundreds of students, but some residents were still surprised to learn of the bloodletting on Harvard Avenue.

"Wow, that's crazy," said one man.

Others said the knife attack wasn't entirely out of character for the neighborhood, given the unruly behavior on display when bars empty out at night.

"That spot is really bad news," said one man. "It gets really rowdy around that time, so I get concerned."

"It doesn't surprise me," said another. "You get all the alcohol going, you get all the kids pumped up."

Police said more charges may be announced against Martinez pending the results of an investigation.
