The 8-month-old Chihuahua was discovered in early September at a Jamaica Plain Stop & Shop. A Good Samaritan brought the dog to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals adoption center.

The puppy had been diagnosed with a severe case of hydrocephalus by a neurologist.

“His head was severely deformed. He had difficulty walking and concerns grew regarding to what extent he could see," said Dr. Andrew Farabaugh.

Surgeons had placed a shunt inside the dog's brain to drain the fluid in his abdominal cavity, where it was absorbed by his body.

"Because he responded so well to surgery and improved interaction with both humans and animals following surgery, he showed signs of having years to live," said MSPCA spokesman Brian Adams.

Jonah had been placed into an adoptive home after the surgery last year and was doing well.

"Months into his recovery, the unthinkable happened, and Jonah had a sudden seizure in the night which led to his passing," said Adams.

"Jonah was one of our smallest patients. However, his heart was immense," said Carter Luke, MSPCA-Angell president.
