The community of Everett is rallying around a young high school athlete.

Alex Taylor, 15, was hurt during a wrestling match about two weeks ago. He's recovering at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

"It was actually in the last minutes of the match. He took the kid down and when he landed he just, his face made contact with the mat in an awkward way and it was just an unfortunate incident," wrestling coach Nick Erban said.

Taylor, a freshman on the Everett High School wrestling team, was rushed to the hospital with a spinal cord injury. His doctor said sports-related spinal injuries are unusual.

"Part of the problem these days is athletes are getting bigger and faster," Dr. Mark Proctor said.

In the last month, two Norwood High School hockey players were injured. Chris O' Brien suffered a concussion just a few days after Matt Brown broke his neck. Both incidents were called unusual accidents.

They are recovering. Taylor is now in rehab, hoping to walk again.
