Returning home after one last chance to find his daughter, Len Gengel said the images of devastation he witnessed in Haiti this weekend will forever remain in his memory.

Gengel returned to Logan International Airport Sunday after traveling to the site of the collapsed Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, where his daughter, Britney Gengel, and five other students and faculty members from Lynn University were last seen alive on Jan. 12.

“I will never forget what I saw and what I smelled,” Len Gengel said. “We got to walk and see the actual rubble and see the hotel.”

Gengel said he spoke with a field worker who has been at the site for the last 11 days searching for the missing students and faculty members.

“When he knew we were coming yesterday, he checked (Britney’s room) again,” said Gengel. “There was no sign of life or death in the room or in the bathroom because her roommate who was alive thought she was possibly in the shower.”

The state department helped arranged the trip after receiving requests from Sen. John Kerry and Rep. Jim McGovern, who is a friend of the Gengel family. McGovern traveled to Haiti with the group.

“We saw the devastation first hand,” said McGovern. “It is indescribable. Thousands of people homeless living under tents. We saw the site of the Hotel Montana, which is totally devastated. It’s like a war zone.”

Gengel said that he expects Lynn University to soon announce “closure” for the families of the other students who are still missing, but the Gengels continue to wait for news about their daughter.

“Our Brit is still missing,” said Gengel. “We are not sure where she is, but we are preparing ourselves for the worst and praying for a miracle.”

Gengel said that the family has been sustained by love and faith in the aftermath of the quake and during their 11-day vigil at the school’s campus in Boca Raton, Fla., with the other families.
