BOSTON -- A local ferry company has been charged with dumping sewage in local waterways and will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.The Rockmore Co., of Marblehead, was charged with two violations of the Rivers and Harbors Act after it dumped hundreds of gallons human waste into local waters, the United States Attorney’s Office and Coast Guard and its Investigative Service said Thursday.Officials said the company dumped sewage at various locations along the Massachusetts coast, including in Salem Harbor and off beaches in Marblehead and Beverly, as well as in the Charles River near the Esplanade during the Fourth of July celebrations in 2002, WickedLocal Marblehead reported.The company has agreed to pay a criminal fine of $225,000 to the Massachusetts District Court and an additional $75,000 as a “community service payment” to the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, to be used for “water-quality projects along the Massachusetts coast, with preference for qualified projects in Salem Harbor,” the paper reported.The company also agreed to publish ads in several local papers apologizing for it actions, the paper reported.
