A second plane was forced to return to Logan International Airport shortly after takeoff on Saturday because of smoke problems, a Massachusetts Port Authority official said.

The Comair plane, which took off just after 4 p.m., was re-directed back to Boston after passengers reported smoke in the cabin about 10 minutes into the flight, the official said. The plane landed safely and no injuries were reported.

About six hours earlier, a Delta Airlines shuttle from Boston to New York returned to Logan after the pilot noticed smoke in the cockpit minutes after takeoff.

Matthew Brelis, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Logan, said the smoke on the Delta flight had dissipated by the time the plane landed Saturday. He said the plane returned to the gate under its own power.

Brelis said Delta Flight 1379 took off for LaGuardia Airport in New York at about 10:45 a.m. carrying 34 people, including crew.

He said the pilot turned back after noticing the smoke about eight minutes into the flight.

The Boston area was being hit by a moderate snow storm during both of the flights.
