A Boston man who police said caused a fatal head-on collision while drunk and driving the wrong way on the Massachusetts Turnpike is being held on $100,000 bail after appearing in a Boston courtroom Monday.

Philip Daniels was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on charges including motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities said Daniels, 33, drove west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 in his Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Daniels allegedly struck a 1978 MG sports car head-on near the Prudential Tunnel, killing the passenger and seriously injuring the driver. Daniels was not hurt.

Authorities identified the MG driver as Rene Bronfield, 49, of Worcester. In court, attorneys said Bronfield was in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital. He lost one eye in the crash and suffered severe facial and head injuries. They said he had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.

The passenger's name was not immediately released until police could notify family members.

Attorneys told the court that Daniels, who has worked as an operations manager for John Hancock for the past nine years, moved from Boston to Norwood recently to help care for his ailing mother who requires 24-hour care.

They said Daniels blew a 2.3 in a Breathalyzer at the state police station after he was taken into custody, which is nearly three times the legal limit in Massachusetts.

Daniels allegedly told police he had been drinking beer earlier at Lucky's Bar in Boston.

Records indicated Daniels was arrested in June 2006 for disorderly conduct and assault. The case was continued without a finding and Daniels was ordered to continue with AA meetings.

His family released a statement Monday saying, "The Daniels' family is very sorry for this tragedy and its prayers are with the families of those involved."
