Still recovering from knee surgery, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is expected to miss this year's official tree lighting on Thursday.

Menino usually pulls the switch to light the tree on Boston Common, but his spokeswoman said he's still recovering and has not been cleared to resume his normal schedule.

The 66-year-old mayor fell on Nov. 8 and underwent emergency surgery for a torn tendon in his left knee. He has been working from home as he recovers.

His spokeswoman said the mayor is disappointed to miss the tree lighting because this is one of his favorite times of year.

In the past, the mayor has been known to attend some three dozen tree lightings all over the city.
