A homeless man who built a wooden shack in the Templeton woods on land he claimed no one owned was arrested on suspicion of trespassing.

The property is owned by the state -- it is even posted with blue signs. But that didn't stop Raymond Brouillet from building a shack on the property.

"I posted no trespassing signs and took possession," he said.

Templeton police charged the 53-year-old homeless man with trespassing on the state-owned land, where the town has a right of way.

Brouillet built the shack on the property and intended to live there, claiming the town assessor's office showed the property as abandoned.

Brouillet even pleaded his case before the Board of Selectmen Monday night. He was only arrested when he refused to leave Tuesday morning.

There's nothing left of the structure now. The town bulldozed it while Brouillet was in court.

Brouillet intends to represent himself on the trespassing charge. He was ordered to stay away from the property. He is free on bail.
