A teenager behind the wheel on Thursday crashed his car into a utility pole and went off the road into Mill Pond in Fairhaven, police said.

Emergency responders had to pull the 18-year-old man from the water, police said.

The man was given first aid and taken to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, reported The New Bedford Standard Times.

The man was not seriously injured, said police.

The crash occurred at about midnight, police said. The man was distracted when he hit the utility pole, they said. The impact snapped the pole in half, they said.

The crash created an oil spill in the pond, officials said. The state Department of Environmental Protection and Frank Corp. Environmental Cleaning Services of New Bedford conducted a cleanup operation, officials said.
