A line painting truck hit a guard rail and rolled over on Route 3 northbound early Friday, forcing officials to close the highway.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. in Duxbury. The truck was carrying about 1,200 gallons of propane, so hazardous materials crews had to be called in to clear the scene.

The driver, Christopher Mandeville, 37, of Quincy, suffered minor injuries and was taken to South Shore Hospital, state police said.

Mandeville was cited with a civil violation for a marked lanes offense.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

The highway northbound was closed near where the rollover occurred between Routes 3 and 14. The southbound side of the road remained open.

Motorists were advised to take alternate routes to get around the closure, either 3A or Interstate 495.

The highway was backed up at least 2 miles by 6 a.m. The right and breakdown lanes on the northbound side were opened just before 7 a.m., but traffic backups were still significant and the going was slow.
