Russell Released On Personal Recognizance

A Worcester district fire chief was arrested by state police on suspicion of drunken driving Thursday after his truck was seen weaving on Interstate 190, according to court records.

James D. Russell, 59, of Worcester, was arrested about 9 p.m. after a witness called to report an erratic driver that almost hit other vehicles, state police said.

According to State Trooper Dean Ricciardi's report, Russell's breath smelled of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet, the Telegram and Gazette reported.

Russell had trouble producing his driver's license and failed several field sobriety tests, according to the police report.

Russell was arraigned in Central District Court on Friday and released on personal recognizance. He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 10.

Worcester fire officials did not immediately return calls to the paper seeking comment on the arrest.
