An Everett couple claims a state representative threatened them over a parking space outside their apartment.

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that state Rep. Stephen Smith has a different version of events.

Mike and Sue Phillips filed a complaint against Smith, saying he used threats after claiming they parked their car blocking in Smith's tenant.

"He goes, 'If I ever catch (your car) there, I'm going to tow it and I'm going to come after you. You know I can,'" Sue Phillips said.

"I knocked on the door, and she said, 'Come in.' All I did was open the door," Smith said.

Smith refused to talk about the hearing on camera outside court. Smith also serves on the Everett School Committee.

He and the Phillips have history. Until last month, the Phillips rented an apartment from Smith. It was about the same time Mike Phillips ran for a school committee seat.

"The look on his face was so, like, evil. He was really angry," Sue Phillips said. "I was scared. After he left, I started crying, shaking."

"I believe coming to Woburn Superior. I believe this is the place justice will be served," Mike Phillips said.
