Police said one man suffered minor head and rib injuries in the incident at Clinton and Congress streets, which occurred before 10 a.m. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the scaffolding collapse.

"They started to dismantle the crane. They were on the lower level. Two workers were on the crane itself in the dismantling process. The crane started to let go. One of the workers was able to maintain on one side of the crane, the other member had to jump as the crane started to lift off and he fell probably 10 feet onto the supporting structure," said Deputy Boston Fire Chief Joseph Finn.

"It would be like you're almost a kid on a seesaw and someone jumps here and the thing goes up like this. And that's what happened and the guy flips. So you can see, even from there, that's 12 to 15 feet from there and he said it went up more," said witness Kevin Sullivan.

The workers were in the process of cleaning up after completing brick cleaning and concrete work at the rear of the building when the collapse occurred. The area had been fenced off and no tourists were hurt.
