An English bulldog that attacked a 77-year-old woman outside her Wollaston home, sending her to the hospital, will be put down after reportedly having already attacked the same woman two weeks ago, according to the local animal control officer.

The bulldog bit the woman on her left thigh and both arms on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The woman was drenched with blood when officers arrived to her Patten Street home, according to officers.

The victim was still hospitalized Tuesday night, reported The Quincy Patriot Ledger.

The victim's yard is back-to-back with the dog owners' property and there is no fence separating the yards, police said.

The dog, named Cooper, was able to reach the woman because it had chewed through its leash, police said.

Cooper's owners agreed to have him put down, said Don Conoby, Quincy's animal control officer.

Conoby asked the owners to have the dog put down because of the severity of Sunday’s attack, he said. If they had refused, a hearing with a police lieutenant would have been held, and the findings could have been appealed to district court, said Conoby.

The owners said they were concerned about the woman and were shocked by the dog's behavior, because he had never acted up around visitors at their home before, said Conoby.

A witness to the attack tried to help fend off the dog with a piece of wood, according to the Ledger. The witness later told police that the dog had bitten the same woman a couple of weeks ago.

The bulldog was licensed by the city on Oct. 21, according to city records.
