A hazardous materials team was called to the Dorchester District Court on Saturday after a device with the hallmarks of a homemade explosive was found inside a courtroom.

Police said a glass bottle filled with an unknown gelatin substance was found inside the first session courtroom at about 12:30 p.m. The bottle, which was apparently hurled through a glass window, also had a wick sticking out of the top, and the carpeting around the bottle was charred, police said.

A hazardous materials team removed the device from the courthouse, located at 510 Washington St., because police could not identify the gelatin within the bottle. Investigators at the state police crime laboratory will analyze the device and inspect it for fingerprints, police said.
