A man died in a fire that displaced three of his roommates early Saturday morning.

The 20-year-old who died in the fire moved in only recently after having signed a lease last month. Investigators withheld the man's identity, and an autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

According to the man who owns the building, the decedent was right behind his friends who managed to crawl out the front door. The man's roommates escaped only to find out their friend didn't make it to the front lawn.

It took an hour for firefighters to bring flames under control. The fire gutted the two-story house on Collins Street at about 3:50 a.m., according to Seabrook police and the state fire marshal. Seabrook firefighters found the man's body on the first floor.

Police said crews found the deceased's body on the first-floor of the house. Investigators said they are focusing attention on the back porch where they think the fire started. The flames spread through to the front of the house, where the victim was likely sleeping.

Authorities said there was no evidence immediately found that would support any criminal actions.

The four men were renting the house from their friend's father, who filled out paperwork for investigators outside the building but didn't feel comfortable commenting.

A noise from the fire woke up next-door neighbor Phyllis Perkins, who initially thought everyone escaped alive.

SEABROOK FATAL FIRE
"I just hear them screaming, and I think they may've been hollering that kid's name. I don't know for sure," she said.

The owner said the building had smoke detectors, but whether the detectors were functioning at the time remains under investigation.

Friends stopped by the house while firefighters continued their efforts to extinguish the flames.

"I never would really would've saw this one coming - never would've saw this fire," said LaShawn LeBaron, a friend.

The owner said he expected the three men who escaped to move back with their parents until they find new apartments.
