A Belmont woman was questioned by police after she allegedly left her 6-month-old child strapped into a car seat while she was grocery shopping this week, police said.

Wicked Local Belmont reported that a woman heard the child crying while she was walking through the parking lot of the Shaw’s Supermarket on Trapelo Road. The woman notified store employees, who called 911.

Officers arrived to the parking lot just after 7 p.m. and allegedly found the baby unattended in the car. Police said the baby was crying and appeared to be covered in sweat.

When the woman returned to the car a short time later, she told police that she had only been gone 10 minutes and said that she had done nothing wrong, according to Wicked Local Belmont. Officers said the woman became uncooperative and had difficulty communicating with them because of a language barrier.

Police notified the Department of Children and Families of the incident.
