CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Reading man who was shot and killed by an off-duty security officer after stabbing a Massachusetts General Hospital doctor had previously frightened a woman by following her for miles, police records show.Jay Carciero, 37, was arrested in April 2007 after a woman told police he had followed her from Lexington into Cambridge – a distance of nine miles -- according to the report filed by Cambridge police. The Billerica woman, whose name was redacted from the report, told police "she knew she was being followed from Routes 4 and 225 in Lexington and she did everything to avoid him." The woman, who was shaken by the incident, said she drove through the Lexington High School parking lot and into the Alewife MBTA lot along the way in attempt to stop Carciero from following her, but he continued to "remain right behind her.""She stated he would not allow another car between them along Route 2," according to the report. The woman called her husband, who told her to drive until she found a police officer. She pulled over at Mt. Auburn and Plympton Streets in Cambridge, where Carciero was arrested. The officer who arrested Carciero said he gave his name to police as "James Black." Carciero's car was searched by police and a photo ID with his real name was discovered.Carciero was charged by Cambridge police with disorderly conduct and providing false information. He admitted guilt and was sentenced to a year's probation.Carciero was shot and killed last week by off-duty security guard Paul M. Langone, 33, after Carciero stabbed Dr. Astrid Desrosiers during a therapy session at a clinic for bipolar treatment and research.Carciero's family said that event was "unexplainable" to them, because "Jay was known to his family and friends as such a gentle and caring person."
