A New Bedford man was shot and killed by Massachusetts State Police after he allegedly shot a state trooper who was executing a search warrant, according to police.

Police went to 21 Shawmut Ave. at about 6 a.m. to execute a warrant to search for alleged illegal narcotics inside that residence.

Troopers knocked on the exterior door of the two-family home and verbally announced their presence, that they were police officers, and that they had a warrant. They then moved through that door and approached an interior door that led to the first floor apartment that was the subject of the warrant.

As the troopers approached the second door, multiple gunshots were fired through the wall next to the door at the troopers, police said. One member of the entry team was struck in the torso by one of the shots fired from within the apartment, police said. Troopers discharged their weapons, and a man suffered fatal injuries, police said.

"There were 12 gunshots in a row," one witness said.

"We have a situation where during the midst of the shooting, a woman and child were in the home," Bristol County District Attorney Samuel Sutter said.

The trooper who was shot was wearing protective body armor, which absorbed the impact of the bullet. Because of his protective armor, the trooper suffered no immediately apparent injuries.

"The vest he had on was type they wear when they are doing entries," Massachusetts State Police Department Lt Steven O'Reilly said.

The victim was not identified.

"He was a good guy," said a friend of the victim. "He was a family guy, and to see this, this is a tragedy."
