What started with a phone call to a museum Monday wound up sparking a full-scale investigation in Cambridge that involved the military.

A homeowner on Garden Street wanted to donate an old cannonball he had owned for almost 20 years. The museum he contacted advised him to call police instead.

Ultimately, the Department of Defense and the bomb squad all ended up at the scene. An X-ray was used to determine that the device was no longer explosive.
