A high school senior has been charged with motor vehicle homicide and speeding after his teenage passenger was killed Sunday night in a single-car crash in Boxford.

Michael Doherty, 18, was killed when the car he was riding in struck a tree on Highland Road at about 6:30 p.m. He was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, Evan Wiendczak, 18, was injured in the crash. Police said was cited for motor vehicle homicide and speeding.

Doherty was a senior at Masconomet High School. Grief stricken and in tears, dozens of his friends came to lay flowers at the crash site.

"Everybody liked him. He didn't have a mean bone in his body," one friend said.

"He wanted to move to Florida and race bikes. He had it all planned out," friend Andy Soucy said.

Masconomet Principal Pamela Culver said counseling would be available to students.

"The death of a fellow student is a very disturbing and scary thing for kids, even if they did not know him well. It makes them realize how fragile life really is," Culver said.
