Eugene Fernandes, 45, was apprehended by Attleboro police, and he is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Attleboro District Court.

A 43-year-old Fairhaven woman was shopping at the Stop and Shop on Huttleston Avenue at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 when Fernandes allegedly approached her in the parking lot. Police said he followed her to her car and was able to get into the passenger's side as she was trying to leave.

"She got in the vehicle, he forced his way into the passenger side, which was unlocked, and demanded she drive him to New Bedford," Fairhaven Police Department Chief Michael Ryan said.

Fernandes allegedly forced the woman to drive him to a number of locations in New Bedford, telling her that he may be armed, according to police. At one location, he forced the vehicle into park, removed the keys from the ignition and took the victim's cell phone, officials said.

The woman was eventually able to grab her cell phone from the man and exit the car. She ran to an apartment building for help.

Detectives from Fairhaven were able review the security tapes from the store to identify Fernandes.

Fairhaven police detectives issued a warrant for Fernandes' arrest last week. He is being charged with kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, robbery, breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, threats to commit a crime and destruction of property.

Anyone with information as to his whereabouts was urged to contact the Fairhaven Police Detective Division at 508-997-7421.

Fernandes was also wanted in connection with a robbery at Le Place, an alternative lifestyle bar in New Bedford, police said. The robbery happened on Oct. 14, one day before the Fairhaven incident.

Fernandes and an unknown accomplice assaulted the male bartender, robbed the bar of an unknown amount of money and ripped the phone off the wall as he was leaving, New Bedford police said.

New Bedford police said they issued a warrant for Fernandes' arrest for robbery and intimidation of a witness.

New Bedford police said Fernandes is also suspected in a recent purse snatching and possibly some other incidents.
