Police Searching For Wareham Man

BOSTON -- Police are searching for a Wareham man who is accused of kidnapping a woman at a Fairhaven grocery store and robbing a New Bedford bar. A 43-year-old Fairhaven woman was shopping at the Stop and Shop on Huttleston Avenue at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 when a man approached her in the parking lot. Police said he followed her to her car and was able to get into the passenger's side as she was trying to leave."She got in the vehicle, he forced his way into the passenger side, which was unlocked, and demanded she drive him to New Bedford," Fairhaven Police Department Chief Michael Ryan said.He allegedly forced the woman to drive him to a number of locations in New Bedford, telling her that he may be armed. At one location, the man forced the vehicle into park, removed the keys from the ignition and took the victim's cell phone.The woman was eventually able to grab her cell phone from the man and exit the car. She ran to an apartment building for help. The man fled the area and was last seen on Tallman Street in New Bedford.The victim described the man as a tall, slim black mam about 180 pounds and wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap.Detectives from Fairhaven were able review the security tapes from the store to identify a suspect as Eugene Fernandes, 45. Fernandes is well known to detectives from Fairhaven, New Bedford and Wareham and has a long criminal history, police said.Fairhaven police detectives issued a warrant for Fernandes' arrest on Monday. He is being charged with kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, robbery, breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, threats to commit a crime and destruction of property.Anyone with information as to his whereabouts was urged to contact the Fairhaven Police Detective Division at 508-997-7421.Fernandes is also wanted in connection with a robbery at Le Place, an alternative lifestyle bar, in New Bedford, police said. The robbery happened on Wednesday Oct. 14, one day before the Fairhaven incident.Fernandes and an unknown accomplice assaulted the male bartender, robbed the bar of an unknown amount of money and ripped the phone off the wall as he was leaving, New Bedford police said.New Bedford police said they issued a warrant for Fernandes' arrest for robbery and intimidation of a witness.New Bedford police said Fernandes is also suspected in a recent purse snatching and possibly some other incidents.
