A burst sprinkler pipe in a downtown Boston building across from City Hall Plaza forced the city to shut down a building early Monday, and workers were not able to get in as usual in the morning, but the company that manages the property said they were given the go head to re-open just before noon.

“The Boston Fire Department has informed us that One, Two and Three Center Plaza has been cleared to re-open. We have contacted our employees and tenants to inform them that the building is open and it is safe to return. We are very appreciative of the work of the Boston Fire Department and Boston Water and Sewer for their diligent work on this matter,” said Karen Baker of Equity Office Properties.

Water and sewer officials said a sprinkler main erupted, flooding the street about 3 a.m. at the corner of Cambridge and Sudbury streets. They were able to get the flooding under control, but water leaked into the basement of One Center Plaza, which forced them to shut off electricity to the building.

With no electricity, there is no fire protection to the building, so fire officials said the high-rise had to be closed for the day.

Cambridge Street was also reduced to one lane while crews worked to repair the main break.

The Government Center MBTA stop was not affected, however, and all trains were running on time.
