BOSTON -- A blind Chihuahua puppy that was abandoned at a local supermarket will undergo brain surgery later this week in an effort to save his life. The 8-month-old Chihuahua was discovered in early September at a Jamaica Plain Stop & Shop. A Good Samaritan brought the dog to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals adoption center."When this dog was brought to us, we knew he would need immediate and sophisticated medical care if there was any hope in saving him," said MSPCA manager Meagan Rock. The puppy was diagnosed with severe case of hydrocephalus by a neurologist.“In layman’s terms, fluid has accumulated inside his brain and the high pressure from this has compressed his brain into a thin shell," said Rock. The puppy, named Jonah, showed some improvement with medication, but veterinarians said his condition then began to deteriorate.“His head was severely deformed. He had difficulty walking and concerns grew regarding to what extent he could see," said Dr. Andrew Farabaugh.Surgeons will place a shunt inside the dog's brain to drain the fluid in his abdominal cavity, where it will be absorbed by his body."The surgery is technically challenging and has a small mortality rate and other complications, but without surgery, Jonah will die," said Farabaugh. “He has been through more hardship in his short life than most animals will ever face, and he continues to battle to live. We will provide Jonah with a fighting chance to improve his quality of life.”
